IMPD increasing patrols for massive Black Friday crowds

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The busiest time of year for shoppers has already started and even more people will be hitting the malls in search of the best deals on Black Friday.

“People want deals, so they go crazy for deals. Hopefully it is not violent,” said a shopper.

As thousands of people cut coupons and search for deals, IMPD prepares for the chaos that comes with Black Friday. The department will be increasing patrols and doing whatever they can to stop criminals from targeting shoppers in the Circle City.

“We are going to have officers on foot in the area and make contact with people who are out shopping to make sure we have a presence,” said Commander Chris Bailey of the IMPD North District.

The North District has the largest amount of commercial shopping centers in central Indiana and includes the Fashion Mall, Castleton Square Mall, Glendale Town Center and other shopping areas. IMPD North District officers along with Marion County sheriff's deputies will be out in full force, working with mall security.

“If you think you are going to come to North District and take advantage of people, this is not the place or the year for you to do that. You never know who will be watching you,” said Commander Bailey.

This year’s holiday shopping season is expected to be huge. The National Retail Federation estimates that Americans will spend around $655 billion, which means long lines in Indianapolis, where people may lose their tempers.

“We always have a few skirmishes here and there, but my message to people is use Hoosier hospitality. There is not a toy or electronic out there that is worth hurting someone, ruining your holiday, or going to jail,” said Commander Bailey.

Every year police expect an increase in shoplifting and other retail crimes and ask the public to keep an eye on your cars and belongings.
