Flora community remembers four young sisters killed in house fire

FLORA, Ind. -- A community came together Tuesday night to remember and honor four young sisters who were killed when their Flora home caught fire early Monday morning.

Authorities in Carroll County identified the sisters as:

  • Kionnie Precious Welch, age 5
  • Kerriele Danyell McDonald, age 7
  • Kayara Janell Phillips, age 9
  • Keyana Latrice Davis, age 11

All four girls were members of the Lafayette Diamonds Cheer team. They just competed in a major competition this past weekend. Their fellow cheer team members lit candles in purple glitter outside the home in Flora. They also brought balloons, stuffed animals and posters to honor the sisters."

They never stopped smiling. ever. I can’t ever think of a time that they weren’t smiling. They were always happy, always joyful, helpful, and they were the most respectful girls I’ve ever seen," said their cheerleading coach, Allie Sheets.

The community also gathered for a prayer vigil at a church across the street from the home. After, dozens of people dropped off roses at the site of the fire.

The girls mother, Gaylin Rose, is recovering in a hospital. Her father said she was awake, talking and doing okay.

Deputy Drew Yoder, who was injured trying to rescue the girls, is still in the hospital. He's stable and making small improvements, according to Carroll County Sheriff, Tobe Leazenby.

Fire investigators stated the cause is undetermined because of the extent of damage, but they believe it started in the kitchen, on the first floor, behind the refrigerator. Investigators say a smoke detector upstairs was found without batteries. They also believe no foul play is suspected.
