Community comes together to support Flora fire victims

FLORA, Ind. -- In a time of overwhelming sadness, the right words are often hard to find. But pastor Jeff Landon of the Flora United Methodist Church the actions of his community are speaking volumes.

“People are calling just to ask what they can do and how can they help it’s so fresh and new we don’t know exactly what the needs will be, but there are people standing by waiting and willing to help and help this family”

According to Indiana State Police, the fire broke out at a home in the 100 block of East Columbia Street in Flora. The Carroll County Coroner's Office confirmed to CBS4 that four children trapped inside the house died. According to the Indiana State Fire Marshal's Office, their mother was airlifted from the scene.  The children who died were between the ages of 4 and 12, and they attended Carroll Elementary School.

Hours after the fire, Landon says the offers to help have poured in. Offers of food and clothing are ready for when the family needs them, and at the gas station where the children’s mother works, a donation jar sits on the counter. Donation accounts have also been set up at local banks.

Landon says on Tuesday, the church will organize a community counseling session and memorial for the four little girls. He says it will be a time for the community to openly talk and grieve, as well as send a message to the family that the community will be there for the family’s support.

“They did make a difference in this community, they made a difference, it’s a tragedy it’s unfortunate and i hope that mom can move on knowing that there are other people there to help her move on” Landon said.

Landon says he wants to do is add the girls’ name to a memorial garden outside the church. He says its important that the community always remembers them.
