Winter temperatures arrive, experts say get ready

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- Gone are Friday’s unseasonable highs, replaced now with the blustery chills of winter on the horizon.

“We’re at a 35 degree temperature drop from this time Saturday, so we’ve got temperatures all day Saturday that are hovering in the thirties,” said Weather Authority meteorologist Danielle Dozier, “so we just have to get acclimated to it, and we really haven’t been.”

And experts say now is the time to start that acclimation. First your car: remember cold weather can drop your tires’ pressure.

“It’s very important to check those tires now and make sure they’re properly inflated and just keep an eye on that as the temperature tends to fluctuate a little,” said AAA’s Greg Seiter.

Also, don’t forget about your battery. Check it now, so you don’t get stuck later on.

“If your battery is two years old or older, it would be a very good idea to go out today…and just have them do a quick load check on the battery,” added Seiter.

Also, put together that emergency preparedness kit to keep in your trunk. Include supplies like a brush or shovel to clear snow, and a blanket or two to stay warm. And speaking of staying warm, now is the time to apply for help if you need a hand heating your home. The Indiana Energy Assistance Program is there to help low-income families keep the heat and power on through the winter months.

And while the Salvation Army hasn’t opened any of its warming shelters just yet, officials do say you can stop in to any local salvation army shelter to warm up for a few minutes.
