New police chief introduced in Muncie

MUNCIE, Ind.– The Muncie Police Department has a new chief.

Joe Winkle was introduced Friday as the new Chief of Police. He will replace Steve Stewart, who resigned unexpectedly earlier this month after a disagreement with Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler.

Stewart had been in charge of the department since 2012.

Winkle is a former 911 director and formerly served as Muncie police chief from 1996-2008.
