Trees For Troops kicks off 2016 campaign in Boone County

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- Christmas is still more than month away, but a group of Hoosiers is already spreading holiday cheer to military families.

Two hundred Indiana-grown Christmas trees are headed to service members stationed in Guam as part of this year’s Trees for Troops initiative.

This is the 12th year for the nationwide program, which kicked off at Dull’s Tree Farm in Boone County for the 2016 campaign.

Organizers say they’ll deliver more than 18,000 trees to 65 military bases this year.

Volunteers will put letters of gratitude and support on each tree. Many of the tree deliveries include special holiday festivities for the military families to enjoy. This year people across the country pitched in to make the holiday season extra special for these service members.

People tweeted holiday greetings using the hashtag #TreesForTroops over the last couple of weeks. Those messages of support will be spread across the 18,000 trees going to troops this year.

Local farmers, students, community members and FedEx employees all volunteered their time to decorate and box the 200 Indiana-grown Christmas trees.
