Runners take over downtown Indianapolis for Monumental Marathon
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Roughly 19,000 runners took over downtown Indianapolis Saturday morning for the CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon.
Now one of the 20 largest marathons in the U.S., Indianapolis has become a destination for elite and first time runners alike. For the first time, both the full marathon and the half marathon filled up ahead of time with 4,500 people tackling the full marathon and 10,000 taking on the half marathon.
Along with the longer races, thousands more raced in the 5K and kids fun run.
But beyond the races themselves, the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon contributes thousands to local public schools in and around Indianapolis to promote health and wellness.
Saturday, roughly 1,200 students successfully completed the Monumental Kids Movement, a seven-to-nine week youth running program and qualified to run in the 5K. The bi-weekly program educates the children about the benefits of exercise and a healthy diet.
