Muncie mayor releases new details surrounding sudden resignation of police chief
MUNCIE, Ind. — The mayor of Muncie is releasing new details surrounding the sudden resignation of the city’s police chief.
Mayor Dennis Tyler (D) said Police Chief Steve Stewart submitted his resignation on Monday. On Tuesday, Stewart then sent a letter for retirement.
Tyler said he was surprised Stewart resigned Monday and was expecting the chief to instead, retire in January.
CBS4 obtained a copy of the resignation letter. It states;
“Mayor Tyler, actions by you and others proves to me that I can no longer be a part of your administration. Therefore, effective immediately I am resigning as Chief of Police.”
Both Tyler and Stewart said the two had a disagreement. Tyler said he’s not sure why Stewart changed his mind and decided to quit unexpectedly. Tyler also said he’s hoping to appoint a new police chief in the near future.
“All those men and women know their job and they’ll come in and do their job. They’re a great group of men and women who love to serve and protect this community and they do their job in an unbelievable way,” said Tyler.
Stewart referred all questions to his attorney.
