Crews investigating morning fire that destroyed Terrace Ave home

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Crews are investigating a massive fire that destroyed a two-story home on the near south side of Indianapolis Sunday morning.

Firefighters were dispatched to the blaze in the 500 block of East Terrace Ave. around 7:30 a.m. after frantic neighbors reported that up to six people could be inside the burning home.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire showing from the home, with flames threatening the home next-door.

With the home already fully involved, engine crews deployed a hand line to cover the exposure while others went to the rear to attempt entry. The structure then completely collapsed around 7:45 a.m.

Crews battled the blaze from a defensive posture, bringing it under control within 40 minutes.

Firefighters began the process of hand digging out the structure to search for possible occupants.

“Neighbors filled the streets, visibly upset, waiting to see if crews would find anything and were thankful when nothing was found,” said Rita Reith with the Indianapolis Fire Department.

A dog belonging to one of the residents in the home was found several blocks away and is OK.

If anyone has information regarding the fire on Terrace Ave. you’re asked to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
