NICU nurse creates superhero costumes for babies fighting to stay alive

HICKORY, NC – A North Carolina nurse reflected the strength of the babies in a neonatal intensive care unit with her handmade Halloween costumes.

Katie Windsor, 35, a registered nurse at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory, turned the kiddos into Batman, Superman and several other characters, like princesses and witches.

“I figured what better theme than superheroes for those little preemies that fight so hard,” Windsor told the “Today Show.” “They really are superheroes, so it was perfect.”

The babies’ costumes were documented in seriously-cute photo shoot.

Along with the costumes, Windsor also created backgrounds from scraps of fabric. But some babies were bound to their beds due to oxygen lines or IVs, so the photo shoot came to them.

The children’s parents, who signed consent forms, were given Halloween cards from the staff and extra copies of the photos.

“The parents loved it,” Windsor told the “Today Show”. “[It] really gave them something to smile about when they are in a sad time in their life, when they’re having to go home without their babies. I think it brought them a little bit of joy.”
