Deer runs amok inside Indiana restaurant: ‘Amazing food, even the wildlife wants a bite!’

ST. JOHN, Ind. — Workers and customers at a northwest Indiana restaurant held on for “deer” life Monday morning when an unexpected visitor crashed the party.

Bessie and Gus Karalis own Aspen Café in St. John. They heard a loud crash around 7 a.m. and went to investigate. They then confronted a rampaging deer, according to the Times of Northwest Indiana. The impromptu visit happened about an hour after the restaurant opened, and a few customers were inside.

Bessie Karalis saw the charging deer and managed to get out of the way. The animal ran into a counter and then went through another section of the restaurant before bounding through a window, ending the brief encounter.

  • One of the owners narrowly avoided getting hit after going to investigate a loud crash
  • The incident happened about an hour after the restaurant opened
  • No one was hurt during the encounter

Surveillance cameras caught the incident, which the restaurant posted on its Facebook page this week. The video shows the deer running through the restaurant, knocking over tables and chairs. Everyone in the café is clearly befuddled by the whole affair.

The owners called their son, Nickita Karalis, and asked him to bring materials so they could board up the windows. They cleaned up after the deer’s mess—which included a lot of broken glass and some overturned chairs and tables—before café business resumed.

Nickita Karalis said he’s glad it happened early in the morning because someone could’ve been seriously hurt if the deer charged through when the diner was full of customers.

And why did the deer decide to invade Aspen Café?

“Amazing food, even the wildlife wants a bite!” the restaurant posted on its Facebook page.
