Visiting Angels offers help for seniors on Halloween

CARMEL, Ind. –  Halloween costumes, scary decorations and trick-or-treaters can be a lot of fun, but for some seniors out there, it can also be a little intimidating.

That’s why the in-home care company Visiting Angels is offering “Halloween Helpers,” someone who can assist with all that company at the front door. The helpers can shop for candy ahead of time, answer the door during trick-our-treating hours or just give a sense of security, showing possible troublemakers that the senior is not alone at home.

“It can be a little scary for our seniors, a third of all seniors live alone and most of them are women,” said Dr. Michelle Bell, owner of the Visiting Angels facility in Carmel.

“It’s definitely comforting to have another person there, if there’s a lot of kids coming up to the door, that can be intimidating or if they’re trying to manage 15 little ones, so it’s really nice to have someone there to provide an extra set of hands and help them keep them calm when there’s all that commotion going on,” said Visiting Angels caregiver Katie Mellott.

Visiting Angels has some safety tips for seniors:

  • Never let trick-or-treaters inside your home to use the bathroom or phone
  • Turn-on both outside and inside lights during trick-or-treating hours, even if no one is home since a dark home could attract vandals
  • Posting a sign on the door that says "sorry, no more candy" if you don’t have anything
