IMPD: East side sweep part of high visibility enforcement effort

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said a traffic stop sweep late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning is part of a high visibility enforcement effort.

Officers from IMPD, ISP, Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Lawrence police could be seen pulling over dozens of drivers from 21st Street to 46th Street and Franklin Road to German Church Road. Some drivers were placed in handcuffs. Officers could be seen searching vehicles.

IMPD East District Commander, Roger Spurgeon said the high visibility effort between multiple agencies is nothing new.

“From time to time, we are able to pull our resources and do things to help each other out in each others jurisdictions,” Spurgeon said. “We are trying to use all the tools in the toolbox to show the community we’re concerned about their concerns as well.”

In a statement, IMPD Maj. Richard Riddle said a number of warrant arrests were made and traffic citations were issues. He said no search warrants were executed.

Officers pulled over drivers for traffic infractions for things like not having their seat belt on, having a cracked taillight lens, or having improper registration.

Spurgeon said the traffic stops can help curb other crimes.

“It tends to tamp down the amount of crime we see overall, whether it’s violent crime, or property crime for example,” he said. “We need a holistic approach in order to be able to solve our crime and social disorder issues that we have in Indianapolis.”

The sweep is part of an ongoing effort, according to IMPD, to show members of the community that they are taking their concerns seriously.

“It’s a duel message of sending the message where if you are thinking about doing something where you’re going to harm somebody else or do something to somebody else’s property, we are out here and we’re going to hold you accountable for that,” Spurgeon explained.

Police did not elaborate on how many arrests there were, who was arrested, or what charges they are facing.
