CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Chicago Cubs set their 25-man roster for the World Series--and it signals the long-awaited return of Kyle Schwarber.

The Cubs take on the Cleveland Indians Tuesday night (coverage starts at 7 p.m. with a special on FOX59 called "Chasing History") in the 112th World Series.

Schwarber suffered a knee injury at the beginning of the season that's kept him out of the lineup all year, but playing against an American League team provides the chance for him to return as a designated hitter. That way, the 23-year-old outfielder/catcher wouldn't have to play on defense. Doctors cleared him a week ago to hit and run.

In a news conference shortly after the announcement Schwarber told reporters: "I would say probably once I hit that line a lot of emotions will come pouring out. I'll probably cry at some point today. You know it was a long road.”

4 Fast Facts

  • Chicago Cubs add Kyle Schwarber to World Series roster
  • Schwarber suffered a knee injury early in the season that sidelined him
  • He's expected to serve as the Cubs' designated hitter
  • Game 1 between the Cubs and Cleveland Indians is at 8 p.m. on FOX59

Schwarber, who played college baseball at Indiana University, tore two ligaments in his left knee in April. During the playoffs last year, Schwarber hit five home runs, and the team hopes he'll give the lineup some added punch. In games in which he doesn't serve as DH, Schwarber could also come off the bench as a pinch hitter.

“Got here and instantly became a leader as a freshman. That’s almost unheard of,”  former coach Roger Rodeheaver said.

IU’s current head coach Chris Lemonis never coached Schwarber , but coached against him while he was a coach at Louisville. Lemonis says even then Schwarber was a clear star.

“Just a competitor, I think that’s the one thing when you see him we all know he’s talented enough to play but his character and make he just that’s why he’s up so quick," said Lemonis.

Former IU play-by-play broadcaster Jeremy Gray says he remembers making quite a few memorable calls involving Schwarber, including the call on a monster homerun Schwarber hit to kick off the teams tenure at their new facility.

“He hit a 408 foot shot that’s actually marked on that light pole out there… He was a remarkable, remarkable player for us,” he said.

Even though not everyone who knew Scwarber is a Cubs fan they all say they will be cheering him on during the World Series.  After all, he is a Hoosier first and foremost.
