Elwood church volunteer accused of sex crimes involving teenage girl
MADISON COUNTY, Ind. — A church worker in Madison County is behind bars tonight accused of sex crimes involving a teenage girl.
The 35-year-old suspect is facing a number of charges including child molestation, child solicitation and drug dealing.
The case against Jason Maddox first came to light after a 14-year-old girl told her mother that Maddox touched and fondled the teen on numerous occasions.
The alleged sex crimes took place at the suspects apartment over the last 3 to 4 years. During that time the girl told police the suspect would play pornographic videos before engaging in the lewd sexual contact.
“Pornography was something she said he would watch on his cell phone and try to get her to watch. Of course he denied those allegations,” said Elwood police detective Nick Oldman.
Despite the denials, last month police searched Maddox’s phone looking for proof of the sex crimes and instead uncovered evidence that Maddox was illegally selling his prescription pills for cash.
Maddox now faces charges for both crimes.
“We were able to obtain a search warrant. After the interview with the victim, we were able to find on his cell phone belonging to him some messages that indicated some drug dealing,” said Oldman.
According to court records, the victim told police the first time she had seen Maddox watching the videos and touching himself was when she was around 9 or 10 years old. The probable cause continued that Maddox denied ever touching the victim in a sexual way saying he “was not going to admit to things that he didn’t do.”
While Maddox admitted to working as a volunteer at the Elwood Church of God, police point out the crimes are not connected to the church in any way.
“We have no indications anything happened in the church,” said Oldman.
Maddox is being held in the Madison County jail on a 35 thousand dollar cash bond.
