Changes coming for IPS choice program families

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Changes are coming for some IPS students and families.

IPS has 64 schools; 19 of those have choice programs, focused on specific subjects, like medicine or a foreign language.

Starting soon, those choice programs will be set up differently to allow more students a chance to enroll.

The IPS Board of School Commissioners approved changes to the choice (magnet) school proximity boundaries.

New, smaller proximity boundaries will ensure greater equity by allowing more students outside of the midtown neighborhoods a chance to enroll, say those behind the changes.

“This is an opportunity for students to find out what best suits their learning style and their interests, but also these are environments that are more diverse and in many cases performing well academically,” said IPS Superintendent Dr. Lewis Ferebee.

Changes were also made to the lottery selection process.

IPS will now offer a three-phased seat selection process to give families a higher chance to get into their preferred school.

Families have a one opportunity coming up to learn about all IPS programs, including the choice programs, at the Showcase of Schools:

  • Saturday, November 19
  • 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Indiana State Museum
  • Staff from all schools will be there answering questions.

The choice lottery opens that same day, and IPS will have teams available to help families with that process.
