UPDATE (April 4, 2018)– Melanie Messer pleaded guilty to aggravated battery and will be sentenced on May 24.
PLAINFIELD, Ind.– The owner of a Plainfield day care that was operating illegally is now facing charges in the death of a 16-month-old toddler.
Melanie Messer, 44, is facing a charge of aggravated battery resulting in death of a child.
The child was found unresponsive at Messer’s home in the 1100 block of EastHadley Road on August 8. She was transported to the hospital with a severe brain injury. Three days later, she died.
The Department of Child Services said the in-home day care was operating illegally. Messer had previously been told to stop, or get licensed with the state.
CBS4 spoke with Messer in August.
“This is very hard on everyone. She was also my family member. I have nothing more to say,” she said.
Messer was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon.
