Police: Suspect who opened fire on police in Michigan had 2 handguns, dies after officer returns fire

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — An investigation into an officer-involved shooting is underway in Benton Harbor, Mich.

According to Benton Harbor police, officers received a call around 2:20 a.m. Tuesday that someone was holding a man at gunpoint inside a home on Pavone Avenue.

Police approached a home matching the description given to them; after cautiously approaching the residence, they were able to talk to people inside the home.

Police described the residents as cooperative; they told officers no one had called police and allowed officers to check the home, according to WXMI. Investigators didn’t find anything suspicious.

As officers left the home, police said someone fired several shots at them from the street. Officers scrambled for cover; one officer fired back at the suspect and hit him. Police said the man had two handguns.

The suspected shooter went to Lakeland Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. According to WSBT, a small crowd gathered at the hospital after the shooting, necessitating the presence of Michigan State Police to serve as backup.

Police said no officers were injured in the incident, and the officer who opened fire has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

Michigan State Police have been called to help with the investigation.
