Hoosiers urged to check voter registration status ahead of midnight deadline

INDIANAPOLIS – The deadline has passed to register to vote at county clerk’s offices statewide, but Hoosier voters still have until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday to do so online.

"Hoosiers are certainly embracing the online technology," Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson said. "It’s really helping them be a part of our democratic process."

Earlier in the day, Marion County election officials tested voting equipment.

“We want to make sure these machines are accurately reporting the ballots,” Russell Hollis said, with the Marion County Clerk’s Office.

Indiana’s registration deadline comes amidst a voter fraud investigation. Indiana State Police are looking into potential fraudulent applications in 56 counties.

Investigators have said it is too early to know how many people could be impacted, but state election officials are urging everyone to check the accuracy of their information before midnight, despite no evidence they said of widespread problems.

“Obviously the sooner the better,” Lawson said. “We’ve got 4.7 million voters in the state of Indiana, so we don’t want to clog the system at 11:59. I want everybody to get on in plenty of time to do that double-checking and register.”

In-person early voting begins Wednesday and runs until noon on November 7.

“Don’t wait until Election Day,” Myla Eldridge said, Marion County clerk. “That’s the privilege.”

Social media sites like Facebook have even sent our reminds in recent days to Hoosiers, reminding them of the registration deadline.
