Police arrest 2 adults, 3 juveniles following attempted robbery, shootout at Burger King

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Two adults and three juveniles have been arrested after being questioned in connection with a Wednesday night shootout at a west side Burger King.

Police say three of the suspects, who are believed to be in their teens, attempted to hold up the fast-food restaurant in the 5100 block of West Washington Street around 9 p.m.

The suspects reportedly walked into the restaurant brandishing guns and wore bandanas to cover their faces.

According to officers, a firearms instructor had just left the restaurant with his food saw the suspects enter the business. The customer followed them back into the restaurant with his own weapon, which he is licensed to carry.

The customer confronted the teens and told them to drop their weapons, but they turned the weapons on him instead. The man defended himself and a shootout began.

Officers say no one was injured and the suspects fled the scene in a vehicle.

A short time later, an IMPD officer pulled over a vehicle that matched the description of one wanted for a series of robberies this week. The three suspects from the Burger King shootout, along with two other suspects, were inside the vehicle. IMPD identified the adult suspects Thursday as Antonio Cowherd and Mikel Kendrick. Both are 19 years old, police said. All five suspects have been charged with robbery.

Police believe these five suspects are responsible for nine robberies in Marion and Hendricks County over the past few days.

IMPD Deputy Chief Valerie Cunningham said there was a series of four robberies on Tuesday night that all had the same suspect vehicle description as the Burger King suspects. One of those robberies was at a gas station in the 7200 block of West Washington Street. Cunningham said a shot was fired during that incident as well.

“Obviously you have individuals that are armed, that are very brazen, out there firing shots,” Cunningham said.
