Police issue warning to parents about Halloween costumes

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Police are asking parents to talk with their children about the Halloween costumes they want to wear and where they plan on wearing them.

Just this week, two men wearing a Michael Myers mask and a Mardi Gras mask and carrying a handgun walked into a Village Pantry in Muncie and robbed the place.

"If somebody’s walking into a business, for example, with a costume on, I mean that’s a red flag," said IMPD Sgt. Kendale Adams. He wants parents to talk to their children about when and where it's appropriate to wear their costumes.

"We don't want to send kids out by themselves with those types of uniforms on that could potentially be mistaken for something else."

Some costumes include fake weapons like plastic toy guns that look real. Adams said parents should accompany their children especially if they are carrying a fake weapon.

“While we don’t see it frequently there have been incidents across the country where people have been shot or seriously hurt because  they are displaying what appears to someone as a weapon,” he said.
