Speedway businesses prepare for visitors to fly by Main Street during Red Bull Air Race weekend

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is gearing up for a historic weekend at the track. The Red Bull Air Race will be held at IMS for the very first time.

The Speedway will be transformed into an aerial race track and will have around 40,000 spectators.

“The cars are unbelievably gorgeous, exactly what you would expect from racing machines. They are beautiful and they are piloted by amazing Red Bull athletes,” said IMS President Doug Boles.

The low altitude and high-speed race will be held October 1-2. Pilots navigate around three laps in the sky on a course with air-filled pylons, racing to get the fastest times they can without hitting a pylon.

Local businesses hope the full throttle event brings a big economic boost to the Town of Speedway.  Barbecue and Bourbon restaurant is just steps away from the main event and hopes the air race will help double their sales.

“We smoke the meats every single day, all day long so we have enough food during when big events like this at the track. I will also bring in an extra server; I will put an extra bartender on staff, and set up an outdoor bar. We work closely with the beer companies too because they bring over their big beer trucks,” said Barbecue and Bourbon owner Marcia Huff.

Business owners know they will not see nearly as many customers coming in as they did during the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, but are excited for visitors to see the new and improved Main Street in Speedway. People can continue their adrenaline-filled day at Speedway Indoor Karting . Visitors can hop into a gas powered go cart and race around the two level indoor racing tracks and do not have to be worried about waiting in long lines.

“We are used to having 300,000 to 400,000 people in town for the Indy 500, so the town is really well prepared,” said Speedway Indoor Karting owner Sarah Fisher.

If you are coming to the Red Bull Air Race Championship, IMS wants all visitors to enter through Gate 9. That gate is located behind turn 4 at the track. Do not drive on 16th street to get there, use 30th street instead.
