MOORESVILLE, Ind. – Cooperation among Mooresville police, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and Indianapolis Metropolitan police led to the arrest of a man sought in a series of robberies in three counties.

The first robbery was reported around 11 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 22, at Casey’s General Store, 239 Indianapolis Rd. In that case, surveillance video showed a man wearing a red baseball hat and sleeveless shirt taking some cash from the store and running off.

Police tried to track him with a K-9; however, police said the trail went cold. They believe someone was waiting for him with a car outside the business. Police collected evidence in the case and believe the same suspect robbed a Circle K gas station at 6945 Kentucky Ave. in Camby earlier in the day.

Mooresville detectives shared the information with an IMPD Southwest District detective.

On Friday, Aug. 26, Mooresville police responded to Speedway, 535 S. Indiana St., around 11 p.m. after another robbery. A review of the surveillance video showed the suspect in the Casey’s robbery was also responsible, police said.

Again, police tried to track the man with a K-9 but couldn’t find him. Investigators think a car was waiting for the thief in that case as well.

Mooresville and IMPD detectives worked together to identify and apprehend the suspect, Thomas William Michael Kaufman, eventually capturing him on Sunday, Aug. 28, on the southwest side of Indianapolis.

Kaufman was awaiting extradition to the Morgan County Jail and faces two counts of robbery and two counts of theft.

Authorities in Johnson County also believe Kaufman was responsible for a robbery at a Greenwood Speedway on Friday, Aug. 26. According to court documents in Johnson County, Kaufman said he stole money to pay for his heroin addiction.
