DeKalb High School football player killed, another in critical condition after crash

AUBURN, Ind.– Two DeKalb High School football players were involved in a fatal crash Friday afternoon.

According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s office, the crash occurred around 4 p.m. at County Road 19 and County Road 40, about six miles from the high school.

Derek Padilla, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene. Lucas Oberkiser, 16, was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Oberkiser and Padilla were both in a 2004 Volkswagon Passat. Padilla was the driver.

The driver of a 2004 Jeep Cherokee involved in the crash was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A fourth person in a 2006 Hundai Elantra suffered no injuries.

Witnesses told police the Passat was traveling eastbound on County Road 40 when it proceeded into the intersection at County Road 19 in front of the southbound Cherokee. The Cherokee t-boned the Passat, sending it into the northbound Elantra.

DeKalb was scheduled to play New Haven Friday evening, but the game was canceled after news of the fatal crash.
