INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — A Greenwood man remains in the hospital, facing numerous felony charges, after an officer involved shooting.

The IMPD was assisting in the search for a stolen car Thursday night when officers shot and wounded the suspect.

That marks the 11th police action shooting in the city this year.

As for the suspect, this is not the first time he’s been in the news for all the wrong reasons.

“I could get see him standing there so I started punching him,” said Karen Dolley.

Repeatedly punching a man who broke into her home, Karen Dolley grabbed a sword and held the intruder down until police could arrive.

“I put 5 pounds of pressure on his kidneys and told him if he took his hands out pocket or I would run him through,” said Dolley.

The IMPD showed up and arrested Jacob Wessel.  Officers say the suspect appeared to be under the influence of drugs during that incident which took place last October.

This week, the IMPD confronted Wessel again on the near south side while searching for a car stolen out of Franklin.

IMPD officers cornered Wessel in a backyard and ordered him to the ground.

Instead, police claim the suspect started to rise a firearm at the officers leaving them no choice but to open fire wounding Wessel.

“I mean officers don’t get up in the morning and say, ‘I want to shoot someone.’  However it’s something that we’re trained to do,” said IMPD Sgt. Kendale Adams.

Sgt. Adams says Wessel’s shooting marks the 3rd officer involved shooting in the last three weeks in Indianapolis.  It’s also the 11th so far in 2016.   That is on pace with the last two years.

In 2015 the IMPD had 20 officer involved shootings and in 2014 the department had 19.  The last three years though has seen a dramatic jump from the 11 police action shootings seen all year in 2013.

“Officers are encountering more deadly force.  Across the country we’ve seen 74 officers killed this year alone.  One here in Indiana.  You know certainly its alarming to us,” said Adams.

Police say they found a gun and drugs on Wessel after the shooting.

No officers were hurt during the incident.  The officers involved in the shooting this week will be placed on administrative leave while the case is investigated.  That is standard procedure.
