MARCO ISLAND — The Minnesota dentist who was made famous for shooting and killing Cecil the lion last summer is back in the news again. You may remember he has a home on Marco Island. Now, police say his neighbor stole his boat and got in an accident.
On Sunday, police and EMS arrived at the Caxambas Pass boat ramp in Marco Island. Andrew Derwin pulled up in a 2015 Ranger vessel.
On board the boat, Nicolas Stolinas had serious injuries after police say he made contact with the boat’s propeller.
Stolinas is still in the hospital. Police said the accident is still under investigation.
Neighbors said they saw the boat flying through this no wake zone at 40 to 50 miles per hour on Sunday.
On Tuesday, police arrested Derwin and charged him with grand theft. They said the boat Derwin was driving belonged to his neighbor Walter Palmer.
That’s the same Walter Palmer who made international headlines last summer when he shot and killed Cecil the lion.
Police reports said Palmer left the keys to the boat on his rear lanai so it could be “serviced.” Palmer told detectives Derwin didn’t have permission to be on his boat.
We reached out to Palmer, but never heard back.
We spoke with someone at Derwin’s residence. She said Derwin didn’t steal the boat, but had keys to it. The woman didn’t identify herself or explain further.
Derwin is being held on a $20,000 bond. His next court appearance is August 15.
