MUNCIE, Ind. – A Muncie man who exchanged gunfire with two Delaware County sheriff’s deputies has been charged with two counts of attempted murder.

The May 27 shootout between the deputies and Gregory Bruce Grider Jr., 28, happened in a mobile home in the 7900 block of East Gloucester Road. Deputies responded to the home after receiving a report that Grider had threatened to kill his girlfriend, according to a probable cause affidavit.

When the deputies approached the trailer, they saw Grider and the woman inside, but did not receive a response when they knocked on the front door. After they entered the mobile home, Grider armed himself with a handgun and opened fire on the deputies, an affidavit says. One of the deputies returned fire, striking Grider.

Neither of the law enforcement officers were hit by gunfire. Grider was hospitalized for treatment of bullet wounds until last Friday, when he was transferred to the Delaware County Jail.

No charges will be filed against the officer who fired his weapon. An investigation determined that he did so in self-defense.
