CLEVELAND, OH – Cleveland will be the center of the political world this week as thousands of delegates, politicians, and entertainers from all across the U.S. gather at the Republican National Convention from July 18 to July 21.

So what’s the point of all this hoopla and why should you care? Here’s a rundown of everything you need to know.

What is the purpose of the convention?

The Republican National Convention occurs every four years, coinciding with the presidential election. The purpose of the convention is to officially nominate the party’s candidates for vice president and president.

Why should you care?

Even though Americans across the country spent the past five months voting in primaries and caucusing for their presidential choice, the convention delegates technically have the final say.

The delegates will vote on issues, which the presidential nominee can incorporate into his or her presidential campaign. Less free trade? Stricter immigration laws? More LGBTQ rights? Those will be topics of discussion at the convention.

Who goes to the convention?

The convention is not open to the public. There are a total of about 2,472 delegates from every state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territory who will attend the convention.

How many delegates are from Indiana?

Indiana has 57 delegates.

How are delegates in Indiana chosen?

There are several different routes someone from Indiana can take if he or she wants to be a delegate.

First of all, there are three Republican National Committee members in Indiana. They automatically get to be delegates.

That leaves 54 open slots.

There are four party officers in each of the nine congressional districts in Indiana. Those officers get together, look through the pool of applicants, and choose three delegates to represent the district.

That leaves 27 open slots.

These final delegates are chosen from a pool of applicants by the party’s executive board members and the chairmen and vice chairmen of the congressional districts.
