CLEVELAND, OHIO – Day one of the Republican National Convention brought cheers, jeers and lots of talk of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, Donald Trump’s pick as running-mate.

Early in the afternoon, Republican leaders quickly approved the rules, rejecting shouts for a state-by-state roll call from the “Never Trump” movement.

The move led to some momentary confusion, a brief floor fight, even an empty podium.

But the effort ended quickly and the “Never Trump” effort had officially fallen short.

“It’s done here in Indiana,” Jeff Cardwell told CBS4, chairman of the Indiana Republican Party. “I mean all the delegates here are united to support Donald Trump.”

Indiana is front-and-center on the convention floor, with Pence picked as Trump’s running-mate.

“I think it’s the perfect marriage frankly between Donald Trump who can reach out to people who haven’t typically been supportive of the Republican Party,” Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.) told CBS4.

When asked what role he played, Coats said, “Oh I’ve been involved a little bit. The goal here is it happened, and I’m really pleased it happened, and frankly Mike Pence sold himself.”
