WESTFIELD, Ind. – In what shaped up to be a final and critical public audition for Gov. Mike Pence, the vice presidential hopeful heaped praise on Donald Trump during a rally Tuesday while fiercely going after Hillary Clinton.

“To paraphrase the director of the FBI, I think it would be extremely careless to elect Hillary Clinton as the next president of the United States,” Pence said to roaring cheers at Grand Park Events Center in Westfield.

Before the event, Trump and Pence attended a private fundraiser together at the Columbia Club in downtown Indianapolis.

“Donald Trump knows that the boundless potential of the American people, and we can make America great again,” Pence said.

The embrace on stage was short-lived between Trump and Pence but the implications and private conversations beforehand will be far-reaching.

“How’s your governor doing by the way?” Trump said. “Good? I think so!”

The Trump campaign has said a vice presidential decision will be made public by Friday.

Increasing speculation puts Pence at the top of the list alongside former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

After a nearly hour-long speech, Trump circled back to Trump.

“I often joke they’ll be calling up Mike Pence,” Trump said. “I don’t know whether he’s going to be your governor or vice president. Who the hell knows?”
