INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Police are investigating the murder of a 51-year-old woman. Just before 4 o'clock Friday afternoon, police were called out to a home on the city's south side, near the University of Indianapolis.
Detectives say a son came to the home in the 1000 block of East Edwards Avenue and found his mother dead suffering from at least one gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim has been identified as 51-year-old Mary Matzke.
Homicide detectives say the son received a call from a relative who said the victim's husband, 52-year-old Mark Matzke, attempted to kill himself outside of a house in the 6200 block of Lake Road near Millington, Michigan.
The son then went to check on his mother on Edwards Avenue, and that is when officers say he found the victim.
IMPD detectives believe Mark Matzke killed his wife in the early hours of July 1 before fleeing to Michigan, where he tried to kill himself.
Concerned neighbors watched the investigation unfold.
"I’m just now moving into the place. I just saw a bunch of cop cars. There was no noise. And it was taped off that’s about it. We looked out the window and just all that out that. We didn’t see anybody coming in or leaving. We were in the process of moving so we didn’t see a whole lot," said neighbor Bryson Basaran.
Police records show officers were responded to two prior runs related to domestic violence at the home on E. Edwards Ave. Mark Matzke was arrested in 2010 for battery on his wife, Mary.
In March of last year, police were called out to the house for another disturbance between the couple. According to records, Mary left for the night and no arrests were made.
At this time, Mark Matzke remains in critical condition at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan. Police do not expect him to recover from his injuries.
