FOUNTAIN COUNTY, Ind. – A K9 in Fountain County passed away this week after developing heat exhaustion while on duty.

According to the Fountain County Sheriff’s Department, K9 Tyson was called out for assistance on Monday to help multiple agencies search for three men who robbed a Walgreens in Danville, Illinois at gunpoint.

During the search, Tyson developed minor heat exhaustion which developed into a critical case of heat exhaustion due to high outside temperature and humidity, according to the sheriff’s office.

Tyson was transported to the vet by ambulance. While he was being treated, he developed complications and ultimately passed away.

Tyson was just 5-years-old, and he had been with the Fountain County Sheriff’s Department for four years.

“Tyson served us as a department and you all in this and surrounding county with pride and we will forever be grateful for his service and ultimate sacrifice to protect his citizens of this great county,” said the department in a release.

The department is accepting donations to the K9 fund here:
