ORLANDO –For the first time, the nation heard from a survivor of the Orlando nightclub massacre. He spoke in front of a crowd of people at Orange Regional Medical on Tuesday morning.

Angel Colon, 26, said he was saying goodbye to his friends inside the nightclub when he heard gunshots. He said he tried to run away, but he was shot in the leg three times. He also said his legs were broken when people trampled over him trying to escape.

He said that the gunman continued to shoot the victims on the ground for 10 minutes to ensure they were dead. Colon said he was shot again in the hand and the hip.

Eventually a police officer found him alive and dragged him to the other side of the street. “I didn’t feel pain, I just felt blood all over me,” Colon said.”

Colon was transported to Orange Regional Medical Center, and he gave an emotional “Thank you,” to staff at the hospital that treated him and other victims.

A doctor who treated the shooting victims says the massacre was “the largest disaster that we probably could have imagined.”

Dr. Michael Cheatham of Orlando Regional Medical Center says hospital and trauma centers prepare for disasters, but “you can never prepare adequately.”

Doctors today described “truckloads” and “ambulance-loads” of patients arriving. They praised the work of staff at the hospital, where six people remain “critically ill.”
