INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Just the word ‘puberty’ can make anyone uncomfortable, much less discussing the details of what actually happens.

Now a local program called Girlology is looking to remove some of that awkwardness for girls and their moms.

The program is led by Dr. Erin Vilano, a local pediatric and adolescent gynecologist at Riley Hospital.

“Girls are undergoing puberty at earlier ages, and a lot of the school-based programs don’t start until junior high school,” said Dr. Vilano. “That’s really past the point when a lot of the young people are already curious about their changing bodies.”

Attendees are in a room with experts and other moms and daughters who likely have shared anxieties and questions.

Puberty can be intimidating, but this one-day program aims to start that often uncomfortable, but necessary, conversation.

“A lot of young people will go to the internet, and I think one of the biggest teaching points that we have in Girlology is that the internet’s not monitored in any way,” said Dr. Vilano. “We want to make sure that girls know that they can go to the best resource they have at home which is their parent.”

Topics include body changes, acne, periods, what a gynecologist does and the fact that girls will have a lifelong relationship with one. They also learn about serious issues, like cervical cancer.

Organizers say the topics are necessary for girls to understand their body and the hormones that control it.
