INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- Mail carriers in central Indiana will be busier than usual this weekend.

They’re picking up food, in addition to dropping off your mail.

Organizers of the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive ask that you place non-perishable food items in a bag outside of your mailbox on Saturday, May 14.

When your mail carrier drops off your mail that day, he or she, will pick up the donation and drop it off at area food banks.

This is the nation’s largest single-day food drive.

Last year more than 70 million pounds of food was collected nationwide thanks to the effort led by the National Association of Letter Carriers.

Locally, Gleaners Food Bank received about 250,000 pounds from the collection.

The food bank says that one in eight Hoosiers worry about where their next meal will come from.

That’s why the organization’s CEO is asking everyone in Central Indiana to consider taking in part in the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

“Please put it out, every little bit helps. Put out a bag, your postal driver, letter carrier will pick it up and it will make a big difference to a family in need here in Central,” said Cindy Hubert, President and CEO of Gleaners Food Bank.

Here are some examples of the items local food banks are looking for right now:

  • Canned Soup
  • Canned Vegetables
  • Peanut Butter
  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Cereal

FOX59 is launching a special summer edition of Pack the Pantries benefiting Gleaners and Midwest Food Banks.
