Traffic stop nets nine kilos of cocaine

UPDATE (March 29, 2017): Bertin Mendoza pleaded guilty to dealing cocaine. He was sentenced to 15 years in jail with a 323 jail credit. Seven of those years were suspended. 

INDIANAPOLIS – A Chicago man is in jail after police say nine kilos of cocaine was found in his car during a traffic stop.

Troopers with the Indiana State Police conducted a traffic stop around 5:20 p.m. Tuesday after they say it was following another vehicle too closely on I-70 eastbound near the 93 milemarker.

Officials say that while speaking to the driver, troopers saw indications of possible criminal activity and brought in a K9 officer.

During a search of the vehicle, officers say they found nine kilograms of cocaine, all individually wrapped, hidden in the rear of the vehicle.

The driver, 22-year-old Bertin Mendoza of Chicago, was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of cocaine.
