8-year-old Richmond boy struck by school bus, taken to Riley Hospital for Children
RICHMOND, Ind. (April 19, 2016)– Police say an 8-year-old boy is being treated at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health after being hit by a school bus while riding his bike.
The crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. near North West I Street and Ridge Street after school let out.
The boy was taken to Reid Health before being transported to Riley. The boy’s condition is not known but the coroner confirmed the accident is not fatal.
No students on the bus were injured.
Richmond Community Schools superintendent Todd Terrill issued the following statement:
This is a very difficult afternoon for us at Richmond Community Schools. Our thoughts and prayers go out to our student and his family. We ask the entire Richmond community to send their thoughts/prayers as well.
Our school district will work closely with authorities to investigate this accident thoroughly.
We are grateful for the immediate response by the emergency services to this incident, not only to assist the injured student but also to check on the well-being of everyone on the bus.
Counselors will be available tomorrow for any students or staff members who need support. We have tremendous support from within our staff as well as a community support network. We are thankful for that support and will provide it as long as it is needed.
