JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. (April 8, 2016) – Commuters in Johnson County are concerned about two construction projects happening at their two major north-south thoroughfares at same time.

Construction crews are continuing their work widening and rebuilding I-65 in Johnson County from Greenwood to Franklin this spring. The rebuilding process is expected to wrap up in November, but due to the weather the final paving process might have to wait until spring 2017.

Just a few miles west of I-65 in Johnson County, crews will begin repairing and repaving U.S. Highway 31 as early as next week. The project is expected to wrap up in September.

“That’s going to be tough especially with I-65 is having work on it also," Greenwood resident Greg Gardener said. "It will be kind of miserable for a while.”

Gardener makes the trip from Greenwood to Franklin several times a week to care for his 80-year-old mother.

"She just had a hip operation so ya we go down there quite often," he said.
Gardener wonders why state officials wouldn't wait for one project to end before starting another so close.

“It doesn’t make sense to me," Gardener said. “I know they have to work on it and everything, but I just think it could have been done at a later date to make it more convenient for the people driving it."
Indiana Department of Transportation Spokesman Harry Maginity said the timing of the projects has to do with money available and the need for improvements.

“We’ve got substantial funding to replace crumbling infrastructure and we’re taking advantage of that," Maginity said. "The benefits are going to be on the backside of getting these jobs done. Everybody’s going to like them once we get done, but while we’re working on it there’s an inconvenience factor.”
