PLAINFIELD, Ind (April 8, 2016) -- A would-be car thief doesn't get away with what he was looking for, but he caused severe damage at a family owned car dealership in Plainfield.

The incident was caught on surveillance cameras and police need help identifying the suspect.

Tim Trump, owner of Hot Wheelz Custom Autos, arrived to an expensive surprise Friday morning.  He  estimates roughly $1,500 in damage was done to a white F-350.

"He punched out the lock and completely broke the handle," said Trump.

The back window was punched out, the ignition column gone and there was glass everywhere.

Surveillance video from the night before shows a man wearing shorts and flip flops lingering around the car in temperatures in the 30's.  Apparently, the perfect climate to try and steal a truck.  The man leaves for about 10 minutes and then returns to the white truck.  He hops into the bed of the truck and smashes the back cab window before slipping his way inside.

"I look at that guys face and he doesn't care. He tried to stick a screw driver in the ignition  to start the truck and there are security measures in place that don't allow that to happen," said Trump.

Trump says he feels violated, but he also is upset for the young man who was getting ready to buy the truck.

"This kid was so excited about picking up his new truck today. He told his friends and family about it and now he can't drive away in it," said Trump.

Trump says the would-be-thief left behind two screw drivers.  The tools have been turned over to police.

If you have any information that could lead to an arrest or you recognize the man in the video you are asked to call the Hendricks County Sheriff's Department at (317) 745-6269.
