FISHERS, Ind. (April 5, 2016) - A $76 million sports complex in Fishers is on standby after the development company failed to secure funding for the project.

“It’s basically in the same spot it’s been for a year now," Fishers' Mayor Scott Fadness said. “(GK Sports and Entertainment) has not gotten its financing in place yet so we’re really just standing by waiting to see if they can put their project together.”

Fishers city leaders announced the project last year around this time and hoped events would start at the complex in 2016. Construction still hasn't started and the Fishers City Council has delayed a final vote on an economic development agreement that includes millions of dollars of tax incentives for the project.

"There’s been no tax dollars committed to the project," Fadness said. "We’ve been open with the community about it and we are kind of just at a wait and see at this point.”

Fadness said the original deal is still on the table that includes a $805,000 per year commitment from the City of Fishers to lease the facility for students and the public.

Hamilton Southeastern High School teams would use the facility for indoor practices and the track and other amenities would be open to the general public certain hours.

"We have a need for youth athletics and indoor facilities and this was an opportunity to do that," Fadness said.

Neil Miller owns the Culvers across the street from the proposed complex at 136th and Olio Rd. He said he was very excited when he first heard the news of the complex and hoped it would bring him more business.

“Certainly you get your hopes up for something that exciting and then it doesn’t come," Miller said. "It’s a little bit of a letdown.”

GK Sports and Entertainment did not respond when asked about the reason for the problems in securing the funding for the complex.
