INDIANAPOLIS (March 28, 2016) – A couple in their 70s is recovering in Eskenazi Hospital after an early morning house fire on.

Fire crews were called to a home in the 7500 block of Edgewater Dr. around midnight Monday.

When they arrived, crews found the home fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters say the couple woke to the sound of smoke alarms and escaped the home.

Crews on scene say the man suffered from burns after trying to put out the fire himself before calling 911. His wife suffered from smoke inhalation.

IFD crews had a difficult time finding enough water to extinguish the blaze because there were no hydrants in the neighborhood. Firefighters had to use tankers and the relay system to fight the flames.

“The closest hydrant they could find was about a half mile to the north and then about another mile to the south,” said IFD Battalion Chief Rita Reith. “So they had to call for tanker trucks to come in and use a relay water supply trying to get back here.”

IFD estimates the fire caused about $400 thousand in damages. The couple told IFD they had lived in the home for 40 years.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but firefighters on scene believe the blaze was started by a discarded cigarette.
