(March 13, 2016) – Rory Feek shared the emotional details of his wife’s funeral in a new post on his blog "This Life I Live." Feek died in her hometown Alexandria, Indiana at 40-years-old after a long battle with cancer. The private funeral took place last Tuesday at the couple’s home in Pottsville, Tennessee.
Rory says the service took place in the barn / concert hall, and he says the last time they were on that sage they were singing together.
“When it came my time to speak, I walked up on the stage and stood looking at my wife’s sweet picture… and words were not enough to let her know how much she meant to me – how much she still means to me,” wrote Rory.
Rory said the service culminated with a beautiful tribute video set to the song “After You’re Gone” by Iris Dement.
Rory also shared pictures of the procession to the family cemetery behind the barn, and he wrote about how they sang “Down By The River To Pray” all the way out to the family plot.
“At the gravesite, Mike Glenn – our pastor in Tennessee spoke of the better place that Joey’s in and also of the better place that the world is because Joey was in it. And he told us how we can all have a service like hers when it comes our time to go, with just as many people loving us as loved Joey. All we have to do he said… is live like she did. And finally, the beautiful life that God had brought from the dust was returned to the dust…” wrote Rory.
Rory described the days as an “afternoon filled with so much joy and love.”
After everyone had left, Rory writes that he visited Joey’s grave one more time with their daughter Indiana. “We took a deep breath and did what Joey would want us to do. We remembered that she's still with us. She'll always be with us. In our hearts. Forever.”
There will be a public memorial service for Joey on Sunday, March 13 in her hometown of Alexandria, Indiana in the gymnasium of Alexandria-Monroe High School at 2:30 p.m. Rory Feek, their daughters and family members will be in attendance.
