INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 12, 2016)—Spring brings warmer weather but it also brings the potential for volatile weather that includes the risk of floods.
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security is urging Hoosiers to become flood aware and plan ahead for potential flooding.
Families should put together a family communication plan that includes an out-of-state contact and meeting places in case the family becomes separated.
Monitor local forecasts of potential severe weather and flooding.
In your neighborhood, check storm drains and make sure they are clear of debris
At home, make sure sump pumps are operational, all gutters and down spouts are clear of obstructions.
On the road have an escape plan that includes multiple routes and avoid flooded roads
Flash flooding can occur with little or no warning. Be especially cautious when driving at night.
The National Weather Service warns, most flood-related deaths happen while driving.
