Appeals court sides with IHSAA in 2015 basketball brawl
(March 11, 2016)– An Indiana appeals court ruled in favor of the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) following a violent fight on the court.
The IHSAA ruled that Griffith High School and Hammond High School in northern Indiana could not participate in the tournament last year, after the Feb. 2015 fight.
Players and parents ran onto the court and started throwing punches after a player was pushed into the wall.
The schools appealed the decision in court, but the court ruled that the penalty did not follow the IHSAA’s rules.
The teams were allowed to play in the postseason, but the appeals court decision says the IHSAA has the power to decide its own punishments based on each circumstance.
