HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. (March 2, 2016) -- A man found dead next to a Hancock County road had been shot and a homicide investigation is underway, police said Wednesday.
Just before 6 p.m. Tuesday, a 911 dispatcher received a call about a body found along 500 North, just east of the Indianapolis Regional Airport, formerly known as the Mount Comfort Airport.
The victim was identified as 55-year-old Shannon Kitchens from McCordsville. An autopsy showed Kitchens suffered a gunshot wound, according to the Hancock County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators had ruled out a traffic accident and said his death was "definitely a criminal matter." Deputies believed his body was intentionally dumped on the side of the road.
Police say they searched a Fortville home as part of their investigation, but have not released any specific details. According to officers, the investigation is ongoing and expected to take at least several days.
