INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Mar. 1, 2016) – Indiana’s infant mortality rate remains one of the highest in the Country. In fact, it’s one of Governor Pence’s top priorities. Now a new helpline aims to bring down the rate, while offering resources to pregnant and new moms.

“We want moms to know that we provide information, referrals and resources relating to maternal child health needs,” said Diana Feliciano, the MCH Helpline Manager. The helpline launched this week through the Indiana Department of Health.

“The resources we have for moms is that we assist them with locating healthcare providers around the State, this includes OBGYNs, Pediatric Care, and dental care,” said Feliciano.

The hotline replaces the Indiana Family Helpline, focusing on all things related to new moms, from pregnancy, to birth, to infant care.

Helpline operators provide three referrals for each issue the mother may have, including but not limited to health coverage enrollment, immunizations and even transportation options.

“To have a dedicated line is really a good idea,” said Julia Tipton Hogan, the executive director of the Indiana Perinatal Network. She called the helpline a terrific resource, especially for those who aren’t sure where to turn to for help.

“Fifty percent of the pregnancies in this State are not planned so all of a sudden you find yourself pregnant and not know what to do,” said Tipton Hogan.

The high Indiana infant mortality rate reflects an overall state of Hoosier health. When pregnant women are not able to find the care they need, their unborn child can suffer.

“It’s those kind of initiatives that give somebody a concrete thing that they can do to get information,” said Tipton Hogan.

The Indiana Family Helpline will stay available for issues unrelated to new or soon-to-be mothers.

The phone number for the MOMS helpline is 1-844-MCH-MOMS.
