INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (February 28, 2016) – Wendy Durham and her nine-year-old granddaughter were sleeping in a first floor bedroom of the story house on Huber Street this morning when they heard two pops and dove for the floor.
“We was laying down and me and my grandma heard gunshots,” said the child as she held out the shell casings collected from the street when the sun came up three hours after the four a.m. shooting.
“I have a bullet hole through the glass up here in the front that shattered and then I have three more bullet holes in the front of the house and then it went straight through all the way to my back sliding glass door,” said Durham as she toured the house peppered with bullet holes.
One bullet entered a front porch window, exploded a hole in an interior window and exited through a back patio sliding glass door.
Durham’s adult son was asleep upstairs and told her he doesn’t know why someone would shoot up their house.
“I mean there was two guys who lived here earlier and they had beef with some other people but I mean, other than that, I don’t know,” said Durham. “Some girl had come by and I guess she overdosed. She was a stripper.”
Durham meanwhile will go about repairing the shattered windows and air conditioning unit hit by gunfire, but she says she won’t be chased from her home of the last three years.
“I’m not just going to up and move and have to stop my life because of some coward idiot kids or teenagers or half-grown men that want to do stupid stuff,” she said. “I’m not going to run from it. I thought about it get up and move by why? Crime’s everywhere. They’ll find you one way or another.”
