INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 22, 2016) – Jonathan Newsome’s days as a member of the Indianapolis Colts have ended.

Less than a week after being arrested for possession of marijuana, the team’s 2014 fifth-round draft pick was waived Monday.

Newsome actually beat the Colts to announcing the move.

“I would like to thank Coach Pagano, Ryan Grigson, Jim Irsay and the entire Colts organization for the opportunity of a life time,” he wrote on his Twitter account. “I learned a lot during my time here in Indianapolis, becoming a better football player and a person. I have made mistakes, but I’ve grown.”

The team also released linebacker Andy Studebaker.

Newsome, a former Ball State standout, was expected to bolster the Colts’ pass rush. He led the team in sacks as a rookie with 6.5, but his performance slipped noticeably last season. He appeared in 14 games, two as a starter, and finished with just 19 tackles and one sack.

Newsome’s fate apparently was sealed last week when he was arrested at his Zionsville residence.

According to Zionsville police, officers arrived in the early morning Feb. 17 after someone complained about loud music coming from his apartment. During the investigation, officers found marijuana on the premises. Newsome was taken into custody on two counts of possession of marijuana.
