(Feb. 16, 2016) – An Indiana University graduate can now call herself a Grammy winner.

Laura Sisk, a 2010 graduate of the Jacobs School of Music, was nominated for her engineering work on Taylor Swift’s album “1989,” which took home honors as Album of the Year. That award recognizes the team behind an album, including the artist, producers, recording engineers and mastering engineers.

According to Art at IU, Sisk engineered three songs on the release: “I Wish You Would,” “Out of the Woods” and “You Are in Love,” a bonus track that appeared on some versions of the album.

Sisk said music has always been a part of her life. She grew up in the San Francisco area and played piano and oboe, and started making recordings in high school when she and her friends needed audition tapes for statewide honor bands and orchestras.

She soon realized she enjoyed that aspect of the music business and applied for the recording arts program at IU. The Department of Recording Arts enrolls fewer than 20 new students each fall.

“The recording arts department filled my years at IU with real-world, hands-on experience,” she told Art at IU. “Every day was different: building electronics, miking different instruments and setups, recording live, recording in the studio, working with tape, and troubleshooting.”

Sisk graduated with a Bachelor of Science in recording arts, along with an emphasis in informatics and a minor in Spanish.

As a professional engineer, she’s worked with artists including Shakira, Pink and Tune-Yards.
