INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 10, 2016) – A former worker for Indianapolis Animal Care and Control faces charges after prosecutors say she performed unauthorized procedures on dogs.

Ashley Chastain was employed as an animal control officer with the agency at the time. Prosecutors said she performed illegal ear cropping on dogs; she faces three counts of torturing or mutilating a vertebrate animal.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the IMPD Special Investigations Unit took the case after receiving a report from IACC that an employee was doing illegal ear cropping on dogs.

Prosecutors said Chastain and a friend tried to perform the procedure on a dog without sedation and taped the animal’s mouth shut. The dog suffocated and died, prosecutors said, and was buried in Chastain’s backyard.

During a search of her residence, investigators found a bag containing the dog’s remains and items that were apparently used during the illegal procedure.

Police arrested Chastain Wednesday morning. An initial hearing in the case has not yet been set.
